What are osteoporosis and sarcopenia?
Osteoporosis is defined as a reduction in bone density and strength, which translates into an increased risk of fractures.

Osteoporosis refers to a reduction in bone density and strength, whilst Sarcopenia is characterised by a loss of muscle mass and function.
Both pose serious risks to long term wellbeing as they are associated with an increased risk of falls and fracture.
How do I know if I have Osteoporosis?
A diagnosis of osteoporosis is generally confirmed with the use of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, or more often referred to as a DXA scan.
This type of scan is requested by your GP and analyses bone mineral density.
After getting a baseline measurement, follow-up scans can provide an insight into how well you are maintaining or improving your bone density.
What can be done?
Research suggests that a multi-faceted approach to osteoporosis and sarcopenia management is key.
One of the major elements for Osteoporosis managemeny is resistance exercise.
Resistance exercise is the use of external load, in the form of weights and springs, to challenge the muscles and bones in such a way as to stimulate new tissue growth.
There is a wealth of research demonstrating not only the improvements in bone density, muscle strength and reduced risk of falls associated with resistance training, but also that it is perfectly safe.
Not only will this type of exercise assist in making your bones stronger, it will build more muscle, strengthen your tendons, give you greater balance and stability on your feet; overall improving your health and reducing your injury risk.
