Active Cycle of Breathing Techniques

Did you know that a physiotherapist can help you look after your lungs?

In our professional training, physiotherapists spend many hours understanding the cardiac and respiratory systems and how to make sure they function effectively.

We utilise something called the Active Cycle of Breathing Techniques to address many lung related issues and promote good respiratory health in those even without issues.

This ACBT framework consists of a number of different exercises chained together to make an effective cycle.

This cycle can then be performed numerous times a day at home to keep the lungs happy and healthy.

As mentioned earlier the ACBT consists of different techniques, these include;

  • Thoracic expansion exercises: AKA deep breaths with or without a hold

  • Huff: a rapid exhalation of air (breathing out) whilst keeping your mouth and throat open and avoiding a ‘wheeze’ at the end

  • Cough: if indicated to clear any sputum

Each ACBT cycle is individual and tailored to the specific needs and abilities of the patient, as a result it requires a consultation with your physiotherapist to flesh out the finer details and make sure you are up and running.

These techniques are effective in ensuring the small airways at the base of the lungs remain open and moving sputum to the larger airways from which it can be huffed or coughed out of the lungs.

In times where people are spending more time sat down and there is a heightened prospect of developing lung issues it is more important now than ever to take proactive steps to ensuring good lung function.
